Surah Al-Fatihah – Meaning, Naming
Names of Surah Al-Fatihah:
Fatihatul: Fatiha means introduction or beginning. Since it is the beginning of prayers and since it was also written at the beginning of the Qur’an, the Prophet (peace be upon him) named it as Fatihatul Kitab.
As-Sabul Machani: Since this Surah is recited repeatedly in every rak’ah of the prayer, it is called Sabul Machani. Machani means two. So some people say that the Surah has been revealed twice and he is called As Sabul Machani.
Ummul Quran: Umm means original. Since there is a summary of the whole Qur’an in Surah Fatiha, the Prophet (peace be upon him) named it as the original Qur’an.
Ummul Kitab: The Prophet (peace be upon him) named it Ummul Kitab. Ummul Quran and Ummul Kitab have the same meaning.
Al-Quran al-Azeem: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: This is the seven verses to be recited over and over again.
Al-Quran ul Azeem. Since the meaning of all the Qur’an is briefly present in it, it has been called the great Qur’an.
Fatihatul Quran: Fatihatul Kitab and Fatihatul Quran have been used in the same sense.
Al-Wafia: Since the meaning of all the Qur’an is fully present in it, it has been called Wafia. Sufyan bin Waina has given this name.
Al-Kafiya: Since it is sufficient to recite only Surah Fatiha in the prayer and since the prayers are not completed with other Surahs besides it, it is called Kariya.
Al-Asas: This name is mentioned in a long hadith narrated from Ibn Abbas. Al-Qasas means root.
Ash Shafia or Ash Shifa: Because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, in Surah Fatiha, there is healing or cure of every poisonous snake bite.
Surat al-Hamd: Since the word Alhamd came first in this Surah, it is called Surat al-Hamd.
As-Salah: It has been narrated in the Qudsi Hadith that Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): The purpose of the prayers here is Surah Fatiha.
Ar-Ruqayyah: Since this surah is used for chanting, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) named it by this name.
Stratus Shukar: Because it expresses gratitude to Allah.
Surah of Dua: Because it contains Dua to Allah.
Surat al-Suwal: Since the prayer of the servant exists in this surah, it is called the surah of prayer.
Strategies for teaching prayer Surah: Imam Suyuti said, it describes the etiquette of prayer.
Surat al-Munajat: Because the servant prays to Allah in it.
Surah Tafweez: Because the servant surrenders himself to Allah by reciting it.
Surah Fatiha is also known as Suratun Noor and Suratul Kanj.
It has been named in accordance with the content of this Surah. The one with which a subject, book, or thing is inaugurated is called ‘Fatiha’. In other words, the word expresses the meaning of the introduction and the beginning of the speech.
